Festive dinner (3 August 2023)

Festive dinner will take place in the Seaplane Harbour on August 3 from 20:00 to 23:00.

The Seaplane Harbour accommodates one of Europe’s grandest maritime museums. You are invited to see the authentic submarine Lembit from the 1930s, the century-old steam-powered icebreaker Suur Tõll, a Short 184 seaplane replica, mines, cannons and many other life-sized exhibits. The museum and the Seaplane Hangar have been recognised with a number of awards: Estonia’s Most Tourist-Friendly Museum 2012, Europa Nostra Grand Prix 2013, Special Commendation from the European Museum of the Year 2014, and a number of others.

The Seaplane Harbour museum is a memorable experience: lots of interesting reading, a voyage around the world in the Yellow Submarine, photos taken in naval uniforms, the big aquarium, the simulators and many more exciting activities.

The Seaplane Harbour, including the Seaplane Hangar, was built to become part of Peter the Great’s naval fortress 100 years ago on orders from the Russian emperor Nicholas II. The architecture of the Hangar is remarkable, featuring the world’s first columnless thin-shell concrete domes of such volume. The building was used for seaplanes until the Second World War!

Scientific excursions

Excursion in the Tallinn ZOO

Tallinn Zoo is a zoo in Tallinn, Estonia, that was founded in 1939. It is the only zoo in Estonia, and as of 2012, it housed 13,336 animals representing 548 species. Since 2009, it is the most visited zoo in the Baltic states.

In 1937, a team of Estonian marksmen won the World Champion title in Helsinki. They brought back with them a young lynx, named Illu. Illu became the first exhibit in the zoo, which was formally opened on 25 August 1939. The lynx was later chosen to be the zoo's emblem animal.

Initially, the zoo was based on the edge of Kadriorg Park. Estonia was occupied and annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940, delaying the planned development of the zoo. It relocated to a 89-hectare (220-acre) site in the Veskimetsa district in 1983.

Tallinn Zoo has the world's largest mountain goat and sheep collection, and a large eagle and owl collection.

Tallinn zoo has successfully bred many animals, including the Amur leopard, long-tailed goral, Steller's sea eagle, black rhinoceros and snow leopards.

Tallinn Zoo is working on a European mink mission to release these endangered animals to wild.

Excursion at the Sae Talu sheep farm

On the western edge of the Lahemaa National Park in Kuusalu municipality, Uuri village, Sae farm live Estonian landrace sheep - Lahemaalammas.

The story of Estonian landrace sheep is almost as long as the story of people living on the territory of Estonia, they are one of the oldest domesticated animals. The animals provided food and clothing for the people. The story of Lahemaalammas began in 2005 when the first coloured sheep arrived in one of the oldest households in Lahemaa - the Sae farm on the banks of the river Pärlijõgi.

Nowadays, the main herd is made up of landrace sheep from areas still preserved in the peripheries of Estonia and on the islands: Kihnu, Ruhnu, Southern and Western Estonia, Saare, Viru and Hiiu Counties. This amounts to a total of 80-100 ewes, excluding the rams and lambs.

Genetic research conducted in 2006 with the support of UNESCO and at the initiative of the Estonian Fund for Nature revealed that most of the sheep at Sae farm are Estonian landrace sheep and all 5 landrace sheep lines described in the research are represented: kihnu, ruhnu, hiiu, saare and viru line.

Lahemaa means a cool country in Estonian, hence the sheep are also cool!
